Position Summary


The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of the hospital, ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and strong internal controls. This role plays a critical part in supporting leadership with financial insights, maintaining fiscal stability, and adapting to the unique challenges of a rural healthcare environment, including limited resources, reimbursement pressures, and community-focused care.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage the general ledger, journal entries, account reconciliations, and closing process.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to hospital leadership, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain financial dashboards and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and ongoing financial forecasting.
  • Monitor budget-to-actual performance and provide variance analysis.
  • Partner with department leaders to improve financial performance and cost management.
Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Medicare/Medicaid cost reporting.
  • Oversee preparation of the Medicare cost report and coordinate with external consultants/auditors.
  • Maintain compliance with healthcare-specific financial requirements and grant reporting, if applicable.
Internal Controls & Audit
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
Revenue Cycle & Cash Management
  • Collaborate with revenue cycle leadership to monitor billing, collections, and reimbursement trends.
  • Oversee cash flow management, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and treasury functions.
  • Ensure proper recording and tracking of patient revenues and contractual allowances.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, often in a lean team environment.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a key financial advisor to the CFO/CEO and department leaders.
Strategic & Operational Support
  • Provide financial analysis to support strategic initiatives, capital investments, and service line decisions.
  • Assist with grant applications, funding opportunities, and financial sustainability planning.
  • Support initiatives unique to rural healthcare, such as critical access hospital (CAH) designation and rural health clinic (RHC) operations.

Qualifications


Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
  • CPA or MBA (preferred)
  • 5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a leadership role
  • Healthcare experience (preferred); rural or critical access hospital experience strongly preferred
Compensation: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
