Mission 
The MuniBilling Software Engineering Team builds and maintains a high-performing SaaS utility billing platform tailored to the needs of multifamily housing providers, municipalities, and third-party billing operators. Our mission is to provide scalable, easy-to-use, industry-compliant software that improves operational efficiency, strengthens resident relationships, and enables seamless billing and payment workflows. 

Role Summary 
The Director of Software Development guides our utility billing software platform's architecture, development, and delivery, focusing on multifamily utility billing challenges. This executive will lead and coach a high-performing engineering team, drive innovation, and ensure the timely release of reliable features that meet customer expectations. 

Ideal candidates will bring deep experience in the multifamily sector—including integrations with property management systems (e.g., Yardi, RealPage, Rent Manager), submetering platforms (e.g., NextCentury, Itron, Honeywell, Kampstrup, Sensus) and protocols, transforming and allocating utility bills via RUBS (Ratio Utility Billing System), and regulatory compliance—and will be fluent in modern engineering practices that power commercial SaaS platforms. 
 
Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
Define and execute a product engineering roadmap aligned with multifamily utility billing demands.
Align engineering priorities with customer needs, compliance requirements, and emerging market trends (e.g., sustainability, electrification, leak detection, real-time monitoring, event notifications, etc.).
Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Implementation, Support, and Client Success teams to ensure delivery of high-value features.

Engineering Operations 
Lead full-stack software development efforts from ideation through release and ongoing maintenance. 
Guide the development of features supporting complex billing structures (tiered rates, shared usage, regulatory surcharges). 
Ensure quality and security across all software development efforts via automated testing, code reviews, and DevSecOps practices. 

Team Development 
  •  Assist in hiring, developing, mentoring, and retaining top engineering talent with utility billing and SaaS experience. 
  • Foster a culture of accountability, learning, and continuous improvement using Disciplined Agile and Lean Six Sigma development practices. 
  •  Promote shared understanding of multifamily client workflows and operational pain points. 
Platform Architecture 
  •  Direct architectural decisions for scalability, security, extensibility, and reliability. 
  • Oversee the development of APIs and integrations with third-party key integration partner platforms (e.g., Propexo, Submetering MDMS, Utility Billing Gateway). 
  •  Ensure maintainability, extensibility, and workflow automation across the modules supporting move-in/move-out workflows, service order management, billing automation, and analytics. 
Execution Excellence 
  • Drive timely delivery of roadmap milestones using disciplined release planning and milestone tracking. 
  • Partner with QA and DevOps to ensure CI/CD pipeline reliability and performance. 
  • Monitor post-release issues, drive root-cause analysis, and implement preventive measures. 
 Required Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent experience. 
  • 10+ years of full-stack SaaS software development experience with a deep understanding of the multifamily utility billing landscape. 
  • 5+ years in engineering leadership roles in utility billing, property management, or fintech SaaS organizations. 
  • Proven track record leading Agile development teams and delivering high-availability web applications. 
  • Proven experience leading teams building SaaS applications on modern frameworks such as Ruby on Rails or similar MVC platforms. 
  • Strong understanding of front-end frameworks (React, React Native). 
  • Experience working with REST APIs and asynchronous messaging for system integration. 
  • Solid background in relational database design (MySQL) . 
  • Familiarity with cloud-native application deployment using containers (Docker, Kubernetes) and modern CI/CD practices (GitHub). 
  • Commitment to engineering excellence through automated testing and quality practices 
  • Ability to connect technology decisions with business value and guide teams in applying best-fit solutions. 
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Master’s degree in computer science or related field. 
  •  First-hand experience with multifamily submetering, RUBS, and lease-based billing models. 
  • Expertise in integrating SaaS platforms with: 
  • Property management platforms such as Yardi, RealPage, AppFolio, and Buildium. 
  • Meter Data Management Systems such as NextCentury, Itron, Honeywell, Kampstrup, Sensus 
  • Utility billing systems are used to download and process utility bills. 
  • Working knowledge of utility billing compliance standards and data privacy laws. 
  • Experience with advanced analytics frameworks and interactive BI dashboards (e.g., Power BI, Looker).

  • Engineering team retention and development metrics

Compensation: $160,000.00 - $175,000.00 per year
