Humane Society Naples, Southwest Florida's premiere no-kill shelter, is seeking a team leader with a strong background in animal sheltering for the position of Shelter Manager. The Shelter Manager is responsible for leading a large team of employees and volunteers at Humane Society Naples’ Main Shelter which is our primary intake facility, shelter and adoption center, overseeing general operations and ensuring excellence in customer service, animal care, and adoptions. As Shelter Manager, you will change the lives of companion animals in need as well as lead, develop, and inspire a team of animal care professionals.

Schedule:
This is a full time on-site job, 5 days per week, usually 8 am - 5 pm with an hour for lunch. You'll get two consecutive days off per week, but you will likely be required to work weekends, occasional evenings, and some holidays.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead, manage, and supervise shelter employees and volunteers in the performance of their assigned tasks, including training, scheduling, assignments, performance feedback, evaluations, and corrective action
  • Oversee department supervisors
  • Develop, implement, and update Animal Care, Adoption, and other shelter-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) 
  • Ensure that all personnel create and provide a clean, friendly, welcoming, and inviting environment for all visitors and the shelter animal residents 
  • Ensure quality humane care of shelter dogs, cats, and other small mammals
  • Supervise, facilitate, and conduct companion animal adoption matches, using good judgment and conversation that minimizes barriers to adoption
  • Maintain supplies inventory including animal food, cleaning supplies, promotional products, and any other necessary items 
  • Maintain accurate records and provide required reports and documentation to the Finance Department
  • Ensure that accurate and up-to-date shelter animal records and information are entered and maintained in ShelterLuv 
  • Promote HSN services to adopters and visitors 
  • Ensure the security and safety of the Main Shelter after hours using closing SOPs and attention to detail
  • Intervene in, deescalate, and resolve customer service issues or employee conflict 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to build, lead, and manage a team comprised of paid employees and unpaid volunteers 
  • Ability to handle dogs, cats, and other companion animals of all sizes, ages, temperaments and needs safely and appropriately 
  • Extensive knowledge of companion animal health, behavior, socialization, and husbandry/care/enrichment best practices
  • Familiarity with and endorsement of best practices in “open adoptions” 
  • Patience and tact with sensitive and passionate personnel involved in the care of shelter animals 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence 
  • Engaging public speaking skills 
  • Excellent writing skills 
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects 
  • Computer proficiency, including data entry and Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with ShelterLuv preferred, or ability to quickly learn new software 
  • Use and understand common companion animal care and veterinary terminology 
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times 
  • Fluency in English is required; fluency in Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred but not required 
The following physical requirements are considered essential to this position: 
  • The ability to see at approximately 20/20 vision with or without assistive devices
  • The ability to hear or read lips with or without assistive devices 
  • The ability to use arms, hands, and fingers, including fine motor movements 
  • The ability to independently lift up to 40 lbs 
Personnel in this position can expect to engage in moderate physical labor, including but not limited to bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, and lifting, as well as sitting or standing for long periods of time. 

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred
  •  Minimum 3 years of experience caring for and handling companion animals in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, or other professional animal care setting
  • Minimum 2 years of experience supervising and managing personnel, preferably in a professional animal care setting 
  • Minimum 2 years customer service experience 
Compensation:
  • $60,000 annually; additional compensation negotiable for highly experienced animal sheltering professionals
