Overview of the Role

The Nutritionist is responsible for coordinating and delivering nutrition services, including intake, nutritional assessment, nutritional counseling, and education; and menu development, analysis, and nutrition intake. In addition, the Nutritionist is also responsible for the coordination and implementation of nutrition outreach and public relations activities with other community agencies and aging programs. The nutritionist may be assigned to manage the Hungry Harvest program and provide oversight of the dietary needs of Home First residents.

Major Responsibilities/Activities 

  • Oversees food service activities at community dining sites and Wellness Centers in Ward 5.
  • Provides input to the Department of Aging and Community Living (DACL) on meal menus that offer maximum nutritional value and acceptance by program participants; evaluates the Nutrition Program and its goals to assess the program's performance in meeting its mandated objectives.
  • Conduct food demonstrations at the community dining site and Home First residences.
  • Develops and provides training for Community Dining Managers, Aides, and staff members (paid and volunteer) to enhance understanding of nutrition and the food service system.
  • Develop community partnerships with professionals and para-professionals to provide educational and fun activities around health and nutrition.
  • Provides nutrition education and nutrition counseling to program participants.
  • Oversees registration of all community dining site participants.
  • Plans and facilitates nutrition counseling, education, and activities for program participants on site and/or in their homes.
  • Provides ongoing one-on-one counseling, advice, and guidance for clients who are at risk of poor nutrition; makes referrals to other service providers as needed.
  • Develops comprehensive plans of care to include, but not limited to, the provision of nutrition and health information, and education; physical fitness tips, and conducting follow-up on food shopping and proper meal preparation as needed. Monitors client progress through telephone reassurance, socialization calls, and home visits.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends within the Nutrition industry and utilizes insights to assist with the development of proposals and expansion/creation of new program services.
  • Attends care plan meetings and interview new applicants for the CRF.
  • Manages Hungry Harvest and the nutrition supplement program.
  • Oversees the Grocery Plus program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications

  •  Must have a B.A. degree; a Master's degree is preferred. 
  •  Must be a registered, licensed nutritionist or dietitian in the District of Columbia, with at least three years of experience in food service management.
  • Must have experience in program management and supervision, preferably involving services for older persons.
  • Must demonstrate ability in organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nutrition activities.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must understand and be sensitive to the needs of older persons.
  • Must know problems and concerns affecting the elderly.
  • Must possess skills in community organization/outreach activities.
  • Must be a licensed driver with access to an automobile five days a week for field visits.
  • Current CPR certification required.
Work Environment: Standard office environment
Equipment Used: PC/laptop, computer printer, camera, office copier, telephone, facsimile machine, shredder, and typical office equipment. 

Compensation: $80,000.00 per year
